Train buffs will be delighted to ride the Mount Hood Railroad (541/386-3556 or 800/872-4661, www.mthoodrr.com [1], regular excursion $25 adults, $23 seniors, $15 children under 12), which runs from the old Hood River [2] railroad depot just off I-84 Exit 63 up the scenic Hood River Valley [3] to its terminus in Parkdale, seemingly at the very base of Mount Hood [4] due to the volcano’s immensity and proximity.
Riders sit in a lovingly restored enclosed Pullman coach. Also featured are an antique concession car and, of course, the obligatory red caboose. The standard ride takes about four hours round-trip, including a stop in Parkdale.
Mount Hood Railroad also features dinner and brunch trains and many special-event rides, such as the Fruit Blossom Special in April and Christmas Tree Trains, bedecked with carolers and other holiday trimmings. The main season is April–October.
