U-pick aficionados flock to Sauvie Island [1] on the Columbia for peaches, apples, pumpkins, raspberries, and strawberries. This rural retreat is about 10 miles from downtown Portland [2] via U.S. 30. If the pickings are slim, superlative bird-watching and a nudist beach are the island’s other claims to fame.
A longtime truck farm is the Pumpkin Patch (16511 NW Gillihan Rd., 503/621-3874), with abundant vegetables in season, plus horse-drawn tours of the pumpkins near Halloween for the tots and a corn maze for the older kids.
