For house-baked Middle Eastern flatbreads and excellent Lebanese street food, go to Nicholas Restaurant (318 SE Grand Ave., 503/235-5123, 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Sat., noon–9 p.m. Sun., $9–13, no credit cards), which must have the most unprepossessing exterior in the Portland [1] restaurant firmament. A bright red-and-yellow storefront on a busy thoroughfare, Nicholas nonetheless has lines out the door for its excellent Lebanese cooking. Nicholas does not serve alcohol.
