An enterprising local realtor hit on the notion of offering self-guided tours (www.modernsarasota.com [1]) of the area’s numerous architectural wonders. Not only would it boost the realtor’s reputation along with the reputation of the area’s daring and futuristic mid-century buildings, but maybe she’d be able to sell a house or two in the process.
To many people’s surprise, there are scores of gorgeous and innovative buildings in the Sarasota [2] area, many of which were designed by The Sarasota School, a loose-knit confederacy of architects like Paul Rudolph and Philip Hiss. The houses are predominately in the Lido Shores area, but examples of the school’s work can be seen throughout the city, and they all evoke a vision that’s both utilitarian and beautiful.
