Food-wise there’s absolutely nothing that surprises about the S&S Diner at Allen’s Pharmacy (4000 S. Red Rd., 305/668-2526, 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Sun., main courses from $5). However, being able to find a great greasy-spoon-style diner inside a pharmacy—as was the norm for decades—manages to be a fantastic surprise. Many of the patrons seem to be old enough to have frequented the diner counter since the 1940s, but in all likelihood they’re here for the super-inexpensive meals. Breakfasts like omelets, eggs Benedict, and hamburger and eggs are roundly filling, while midday and late-day options include such classics as liver and onions, Salisbury steak, pork chops, and spaghetti.
