The first Pita Jungle (1250 E. Apache Blvd., 480/804-0234, 10:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Sat.–Sun., $6–15) opened in a funky strip mall near the Arizona State campus with a goal of attracting the burgeoning market of healthful eaters. And it did. In 15 years, the eatery expanded to nine restaurants across the state. The quirky, Mediterranean-inspired decor blends seamlessly with the eatery’s menu of hummus, baba ghanoush, and feta- and olive-topped lavash pizzas. Regulars swear by the chicken shawarma. The restaurant is well suited for mixed company—that is, vegetarians and carnivores—because it offers multiple meatless options, including three types of veggie burgers, as well as a selection of beef, chicken, and lamb dishes.
