Housed in Tempe [1]’s old train station, Macayo’s Depot Cantina (300 S. Ash Ave., 480/966-6677, 10 a.m.–midnight daily, $6–14) is a festive Mexican restaurant just west of Mill Avenue’s main drag. It’s a convenient lunch or dinner option for visitors to the popular shopping district or neighboring Tempe Town Lake [2] and Papago Park [3]. Lunch specials feature shredded beef tacos, tamales, and chicken chimichangas, though Macayo’s fajitas and spicy Baja specialties are certainly worth a taste. The large, colorful restaurant is best known for its crowded happy hours from 4 to 6 p.m., particularly on Fridays, when college students and office workers are anxious to jumpstart their weekends at the open-air bar and patio.
