Because the island of Hispaniola was never joined to a continent, it doesn’t have many land animals. Most of the mammals that you see today were introduced by the Europeans who made the journey. Out of the nearly 500 vertebrate species of animals, 140 are various reptiles, 60 are amphibians, and 20 are land mammals. The rest are birds, marine mammals, and bats.
