Guayacanes and Juan Dolio [1] just isn’t the place where the “partying kind” goes to vacation, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a nightlife. Most of the entertainment is in the all-inclusive hotels. Some of the resorts will let outsiders into their discos for a cover charge or into their casinos for free. Outside of the hotels, you can visit some of the restaurants in the area and mingle with the other travelers and vacationing Dominicans.
El Batey Disco (Juan Dolio, Calle Principal 84, open Sat. until 2 a.m.) and Chocolate Bar (Juan Dolio, Calle Principal 127, open until 2 a.m.) are two options. The first is very popular a late-night dance spot with both locals and tourists. It plays mostly merengue and bachata. The latter is more of a hangout where you can belly up to the bar, order an ice-cold Presidente beer, and perhaps take your turn at the pool table. Both are open late (until they feel like closing).
One more diversion is gambling. The Sports Bar and Casino at the Coral Costa Caribe (Calle San Pedro de Macorís, Juan Dolio, tel. 809/562-6725, 8 p.m.–4 a.m.) is an American-style casino with music.
