In the Amber World Museum (Calle Arzobispo Meriño 452 and Restauración, tel. 809/682-3309, www.amberworldmuseum.com [1], 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun., US$2), you’ll see impressive examples of the ancient resin for which the Dominican Republic [2] is famous. Along with an explanation of the formation of amber, which often trapped insects, leaves, and even some lizards, there is a beautiful display of some examples of such findings.
You can watch an audiovisual tutorial on the mining process and on how amber jewelry is made. Signage is in English, German, and Spanish.
If you can’t get enough of bugs in resin, head over to the Museum of Amber (Calle El Conde 107 and Parque Colón, tel. 809/221-1333, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., free). Here you’ll see another array of examples on the second floor above a well-stocked jewelry shop selling amber and larimar pieces.
