For 10 days every year beginning in mid-April, myriad cowboys, country folk, 4-H geniuses, and cotton candy–kids converge on the Pima County Fairgrounds southeast of Tucson [2], where they show off their pigs and goats and prize bulls, their roses, jams, and pumpkins-on-steroids, their gullibility and screaming skills, and quite often the contents of their stomachs.
In short, it’s the county fair, an ancient American ritual that is different in Southern Arizona only in that there are usually quite a number of families up from Sonora in attendance. The free concerts usually feature one or two superstar Mexican groups along with a few mid-level American country acts.
