Lined with chic thrift stores, exotic clothing boutiques, smoke shops, ethnic food restaurants, and cocktail lounges, 4th Avenue is an ideal place to people-watch, and there are some really good places to eat and many treasures to be found in the quirky shops. Beware the young men and women of the bohemian persuasion who spend their days panhandling along the street.

Twice a year, in spring and fall, the area closes to vehicle traffic for 4th Avenue Street Fairs [2] featuring artisan booths, concerts, and greasy food galore.

Located between downtown and the university district, 4th Avenue is just a short walk from the University of Arizona [3] campus, and on Friday and Saturday nights you can expect hordes of college kids out looking for inebriation. It’s best to avoid driving in this area on weekend nights altogether.

The Old Pueblo Trolley (520/792-1802, 6–10 p.m. Fri., noon–midnight Sat., $1 adult each way, $0.50 kids 6–12), a historic electric streetcar, runs from 4th Avenue to University Boulevard and on to the University of Arizona’s Main Gate. The trolley also runs noon–6 p.m. on Sunday, when the fare drops to $0.25 each way for everyone. You can board the trolley at various marked stops along the route.
