Although once extremely popular, basketball has seen a decline in interest in recent years, which has put the future of the National Superior Basketball League in jeopardy. Established in 1932, it currently consists of 12 regional teams. The island is also home to the Puerto Rican National Basketball Team, which competes in international events. The team made history in the 2004 when it defeated the U.S. Dream Team in the Olympics in Greece.
Puerto Rican athletes who have gone on to play for the NBA include Carlos Arroyo (Orlando Magic) and Jose Barea (Dallas Mavericks).
