Publicos, also known as guaguas or carros publicos, are privately owned transport services that operate communal van routes throughout specific regions of the island. In addition, most towns are served by local publicos. Publico stops are usually found on a town’s main plaza. This is a very inexpensive but slow way to travel because as riders get off at their appointed stops, the van will wait indefinitely until it fills up with new riders before heading to the next stop.
Publico transportation from San Juan [1] to outlying areas is provided by Blue Line (787/765-7733) to Río Piedras, Aguadilla, Aguada, Moca, Isabela, and other areas; Choferes Unidos de Ponce (787/764-0540) to Ponce [2] and other areas; Lina Boricua (787/765-1908) to Lares [3], Ponce [2], Jayuya [4], Utuado [5], San Sebastían, and other areas; Linea Caborrojeña (787/723-9155) to Cabo Rojo, San Germán, and other areas; Linea Sultana (787/765-9377) to Mayagüez and other areas; and Terminal de Transportación Publica (787/250-0717) to Fajardo [6] and other areas.
