If you visit only one place in Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central [1], go to Jayuya. Not only is the municipality rich in Taíno culture and historic sights, but it contains some of the highest peaks on the island. Some mountains are so enormous here that it’s possible to see both the north and south coastlines from their crests, and the vegetation is thick with sierra palms, bamboo, banana trees, and brilliantly colorful impatiens.
Jayuya also has the best selection of accommodations in the mountain region.
