Despite its new, modernistic plaza featuring metal sculptures fashioned to look like a ship’s smokestacks, Salinas is an economically depressed and depressing fishing village with poorly maintained roads, a small marina, and a hotel, which is best avoided. There’s really only one reason to visit: to dine at one of the modest seafood restaurants that line the waterfront along Calle Principal.
