The largest mammal in the country, the tapir is an odd-looking creature related to the rhinoceros, measuring more than two meters long and weighing up to 300 kilograms. Found in both lowland and highland forests, and even sometimes secondary forest, the tapir—called danto in Honduras [1]—is a frequent target of hunters, both human and feline, for its meat. Tapir are invariably found near lakes and rivers, and if frightened, they will beat a furious stampede straight to the water, flattening anything in their path and letting out an odd grunting sound as they run. Living on a steady diet of leaves, the tapir stuffs its small mouth with an odd, elongated, mobile snout, a sort of proto-trunk.
