Defying categorization is the massive Villa Olímpica, located at the end of Juan Pablo II. While the complex is showing signs of age, it houses a stadium, open-air track, covered pool, and other facilities. The track can be accessed for free and is the one safe place in town for walkers and runners, who turn out in droves early in the morning. They also offer very low-cost music and sports lessons for kids, and there are paved paths perfect for taking children for a spin on their bikes.
While the complex is generally safe, there’s no need to tempt fate by flashing cell phones, money, jewelry, and the like. A few helpful phone numbers are: 504/231-0566 for swimming; 504/235-7334 for gymnastics; 504/265-3754 for tennis; and 504/250-0421 for martial arts.
Runners can also contact the local chapter of Hash House Harriers, which meets sporadically. To find out about any upcoming runs, check their blog at http://hashtegucigalpa.blogspot.com [1].
