At the foot of the towering Montaña de Santa Bárbara, cupped in the lush, hot lowlands not far from the Río Ulúa, is the town of Santa Bárbara [1], capital of the department of the same name. The emerald-green mountain country around Santa Bárbara, dotted with little villages, is well worth exploring.
The region produces large quantities of coffee and is famed for making hats, baskets, and other crafts from the local junco palm.
