Museo de Antropología e Historia

A decent museum, the Museo de Antropología e Historia (3 Av. NO, between 3 and 4 Calles, tel. 504/557-1496 or 504/557-1798, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed.–Mon., US$2) is the most notable cultural site in San Pedro [1]. Its two floors of exhibits outline the development of the Valle de Sula from 1500 B.C. to the present.

The displays (Spanish only) track Sula civilization from its earliest traces at the Playa de los Muertos site through the Lenca or Mayan settlements at Los Naranjos [2], to the colonial and modern eras. Interestingly, the foreign-owned banana industry, a crucial part of the valley’s economy, is barely mentioned, perhaps in concession to nationalist sentiment.

Apart from the permanent historical exhibit, the museum has a gallery for rotating exhibits and a gift shop well stocked with T-shirts, calendars, books, cards, and artwork. Outside is a small patio cafeteria. A children’s storytime is hosted on Saturdays, 10 a.m.–noon.
