The resorts include meals, but for those looking to strike out, Manati in Sandy Bay is the place to go, run by a German couple who prepare authentic dishes like weiner schnitzel, as well as delicious island fare, German beer, and a variety of European schnapps. Locals love to while away a Saturday afternoon here, and there is often live music.

The restaurants at Graham’s, West Peak Inn [1], and Bo’s [2] are all open to the public, and are great places to visit for a meal if you’re not already a guest. The Sunday barbecue at Bo’s is another popular gathering spot for resident expats.

One of the better restaurants in Bonacca [3] is Mexitreats (8 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 6–9:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Sat.–Sun.), owned by a Honduran and his Mexican wife, with inexpensive snacks and light meals like chilaquiles, baleadas, nachos, and burgers.

Commercial Woods and Sikaffy’s, both in Bonacca, are the two major grocery stores on the island, although there are plenty of smaller shops and vegetable stands. Friday is the best day for shopping, since the boat comes in with new produce either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
