Chiapas [1] is a good place to take kids, assuming they have an interest in outdoor activities and cultural experiences. There are no all-inclusive resorts or ecoparks (like, say, those in Cancún and the Riviera Maya), but there are a number of kid-friendly options: Tuxtla’s zoo [2] and science museum [3] are near each other, and are both excellent, and there’s also a large children’s park [4] for toddlers and younger kids; San Cristóbal’s amber museum [5] and Palenque’s archaeological museum [6] also are good options for tweens and teens, as are the archaeological zones, especially those nestled in the forest or that involve a lot of climbing and clambering—good ones include Yaxchilán [7] (which includes a boat ride and the possibility of seeing monkeys and crocodiles), Plan de Ayutla [8], Toniná [9], and Tenam Puente [10].
Finally, Chiapas’s many natural wonders are sure to wow most youngsters, especially El Chiflón [11] waterfall (with a zip line and mist-drenched observation deck), Cañón del Sumidero [12], and Sima de las Cotorras [13]. Perhaps best of all, Mexico is a country where family is paramount, so kids—even fussy ones—are welcome just about everywhere.
