Chiapa de Corzo [1] sees few overnight visitors, as most of the attractions can be taken in on a day trip. The exception is during the San Sebastián festivities in January, for which hotels are booked a month or more in advance.

A long way from California, but right on the plaza, Hotel Los Ángeles (Calle Mexicanidad and Av. Julian Grajáles, tel. 961/616-0048, US$28 s/d with fan, US$33 s/d with a/c) offers spotless rooms, albeit somewhat small and plain, all with cable TV and hot-water bathrooms, in a pleasant colonial-style building. There’s free Wi-Fi in the lobby and 1st-floor rooms, and the hotel’s small restaurant is recommended. Potted plants help spruce up the common areas, and upper-floor rooms face a bright open-air corridor.

A block from the plaza, Hotel Posada Real (Av. Julian Grajáles 192, tel. 961/616-1015, hotelposadareal [at] hotmail [dot] com [dot] mx, US$34/40 s/d, US$46 d/q) has large, welcoming rooms with gleaming tile floors, air-conditioning, wireless Internet, and cable TV. Less well known than other hotels in town, it nevertheless strikes a good balance between comfort and value, with friendly service to boot.

La Ceiba (Av. Domingo Ruiz 300, tel. 961/616-0389, US$58/64/70 s/d/t) is considered the best hotel in town, but may be resting a bit too much on its laurels. The grounds are certainly lovely, with palms, banana trees, and other tropical plants. And it’s the only hotel with a pool—located a bit too close to reception, but heaven on a hot day. Rooms are spacious and clean, but in need of a serious face-lift, especially the springy beds and plain bathrooms. La Ceiba is located two long blocks from the central park.
