Near Parque Marimba [1], Bodega Aurrera (Av. Central Pte. at 6 Calle Pte., 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily) is an aging but serviceable supermarket with produce, canned food, and more. For a much larger selection, hop a cab or combi to megastores Wal-Mart (Blvd. Belisario Domínguez 2058, 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily) or Soriana (Plaza del Sol Tuxtla, 5a Av. Nte. Pte. at Blvd. Antonio Pariente Algarín, 8 a.m.–midnight daily).
In the center of town, the Mercado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (1 Calle Ote. Sur at 3 Calle Sur Ote., 6 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 6 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Sun.) has mountains of bright fruits and vegetables, rows of live chickens, and scores of flower stands, shoemakers, bicycle repair shops—you name it, it’s here. When you visit, be sure to try a cold glass of tazcalate, a sweet drink made from local chocolate, cinnamon, and pinole (roasted corn).
