Mercado José Castillo (Av. General Utrilla at Nicaragua, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. daily) is a sprawling public market with just about anything you could want, from great fresh fruit and vegetables to bootleg CDs and flip-flops. It’s worth a visit, even just to look.
Across from the market is El Mayoreo (Av. General Utrilla s/n, 7:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Sun.), a large supermarket with decent prices and selection.
The centrally located Super Más (Real de Guadalupe near Av. General Utrilla, 8 a.m.–9:30 p.m. daily) has a deli, bakery, and one of the best wine selections in town. Prices are a little higher than average but the location can’t be beat.
Many locals derive no small pride from the fact that their modest little city has a Chedraui megastore (Diagonal Hermanos Paniagua 50, 8 a.m.–11 p.m. daily), in a small mall that also has retail shops, a movie theater, and a food court.
