You won’t run out of things to see and visit in San Cristóbal [1]. There are literally dozens of historic churches [2] and buildings [3], large and small, nearly all dating to the colonial era, and a seemingly equal number of museums and galleries dedicated to everything from amber [4] to coffee [5] to modern art [6].
On the outskirts of town are a slew of natural attractions, including caves [7] and forest reserves [8], and beyond that are a vast array of indigenous communities [9], each quite different from the next.
If you’re traveling with a cell phone that has Telcel coverage, you can use it to receive text messages with in-depth information on San Cristóbal’s historical sites. Text messages cost US$0.35 and are sent in Spanish, English, French, Italian, and German. (Tzotzil and Tzeltal too, if you happen to be fluent.) Look for the burgundy markers in front of each site for codes.
