Ch’ol Maya for Falling Water, Cascada Wejlib-Já (7 a.m.–7 p.m., US$1) is a large waterfall and swimming area that’s popular among locals and a reasonably worthwhile stop for travelers looking for a place to cool off. From the parking area, a path follows the riverbank past several swimming holes and waterside picnic tables. (There’s also a simple eatery near the entrance.)
The falls are a short distance further, a thick rope of water lumbering through a limestone notch and crashing into a large pool 20 meters below. The path winds around to the bottom, where you can swim as well.
The falls are most powerful in September and October, at the end of the rainy season, but the water is clearer during dry months.
A huge sign marks the turnoff for Wejlib-Já, about 30 kilometers from Palenque [1]. From there, it’s 500 meters by dirt road to the entrance.
