Taking in a concert or dance performance at the landmark Teatro Amazonas [1] (Praça São Sebastião, Centro, tel. 92/3622-1880, www.teatroamazonas.com.br [2]) is an unforgettable experience. It’s worth the price of a ticket merely to soak up the sumptuous ambiance. However, Manaus [3]’s opera house draws an impressive roster of talents from all over Brazil [4] and the world. Monday night performances are free.
Also worth checking out is the Centro Cultural Usina Chaminé (Av. Lourenço da Silva Braga, Centro, tel. 92/3633-3026), an artfully renovated sewage plant with a beautiful interior that hosts art exhibits as well as music and dance performances.
Every year, from late April through May, the Festival Amazonas de Ópera, attracts a lineup of big-name national and international soloists who perform a mixture of classical operas and Brazilian compositions in the magnificent Teatro Amazonas. The schedule of performances and tickets are available at the teatro several weeks in advance (see Sights).
