In 2001, the Portuguese-Brazilian production team of a film entitled A Selva (The Jungle) built an entire rubber plantation in the midst of the jungle, an hour from Manaus [1]. When filming was completed, the replica of a late-19th-century seringal (rubber plantation) was converted into the Museu do Seringal Vila Paraíso (Igarapé São João, tel. 92/3658-6159, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed.–Sun., R$5).
A visit to this open-air museum will take you on an evocative journey into the late-19th-century world of rubber tapping, where you can observe actual rubber trees along with displays depicting the harrowing living and working conditions of the seringueiros (tappers). Canoe taxis leave from the Marina David in Ponta Negra and sail up the Rio Negro to the museum. The trip usually costs around R$12 and takes 25 minutes.
