Belém [1] sits at the intersection of the Rio Guamá with the Baía de Guajará. The river defines Belenense life, and along its banks you’ll find many of the city’s most interesting sights. Fanning out from the Forte do Presépio [2], the historic quarter known as Cidade Velha [2] is rife with a wonderful mishmash of old buildings that range in style from baroque to art deco.
Cidade Velha’s northern boundary is Avenida President Vargas, Belém’s main boulevard, which stretches up from the waterfront to Praça da República, the city’s elegant main square.
