The 380-hectare Ecoparque do Una, 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Ilhéus [1] along the BA-101 coastal highway, preserves exuberant vegetation and centuries-old trees that are typical of the native Atlantic forest that once covered all of coastal Brazil [2].
Guides will lead you on a short hiking trail (involving some tree-trekking) through the park, allowing you the chance to glimpse the likes of deer, armadillos, and the rare but unforgettable mico-leão-de-cara-dourada (golden-faced lion monkey).
Other highlights include a demonstration of how latex is extracted from rubber trees and a chance to take a refreshing plunge in a freshwater lagoon. Advance reservations are required. For more information call 73/3633-1121 or consult with Ilhéus travel agencies.
