Vegetarians beware! In Rio Grande do Sul [1]’s capital, churrasco is an art form and the city’s churrascarias are temples where carnivores fervently worship the most succulent cuts of red meat on the planet. Although you’ll find churrascarias and rodízios throughout Brazil [2], the best (not to mention the cheapest) are in Porto Alegre [3].

Although all churrascarias serve salads and vegetable dishes on the side, if meat really isn’t your thing, there are also some fine eateries representing Rio Grande do Sul’s major immigrant groups: Italians, Germans, and Poles. Centro has many options during the day, but at night, when the area closes down, you’ll have to search for sustenance in surrounding regions such as swanky Moinhos de Vento.
