Located in the chic and wealthy suburban bairro of Morumbi, the Fundação Maria Luiza e Oscar Americano (Av. Morumbi 4077, www.fundacaooscaramericano.org.br [1], 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., R$8) occupies an elegant streamlined house, reminiscent of a Frank Lloyd Wright design. It was built in 1952 as a residence for wealthy engineer Oscar Americano and his wife, who were avid collectors of Brazilian art.
The interior displays an impressive ensemble of paintings, furnishings, and religious art as well as some objects belonging to Brazil [2]’s imperial family, such as Princesa Isabel’s furniture and Princesa Leopoldina’s fine porcelain.
After checking out the art, take a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens, whose wooded areas are home to over 50 types of birds. If you come in the afternoon, treat yourself to the lavish high tea (R$40), which includes brioches, croissants, tarts, and cakes.
