Paraty [1] is famous for its cachaças, produced by traditional alembics in the surrounding region. The varieties available range from “white” and aged to those suffused with honey (great for a sore throat), cinnamon, and numerous herbs, spices, and fruits. One of the most potent brands is Corisco, while Paratiana and Maria Izabel are smoother and more discreet.
Specialized cachaça boutiques—where you can sample the wares, even if you don’t want to purchase—include the Armazém da Cachaça (Rua do Comércio, tel. 24/3371-7519) and Empório da Cachaça (Rua Dr. Samuel da Costa 22, tel. 24/3371-6329).
