The area known as Baixa Gávea has been a nocturnal hot spot for years, luring beautiful young Zona Sulistas to the lively bars fanning out from Praça Santos Dumont.
Braseira da Gávea (Praça Santos Dumont 116, tel. 21/2239-7494, 11:30 a.m.–1 a.m. Mon.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–3 a.m. Fri.–Sat., 11:30 a.m.–1 a.m. Sun.) is one of the most traditional botequins [1] on the scene. It serves up a delicious charcoal-grilled chicken with fries that satisfies late-night hunger pangs.
Gávea is also home to one of the Zona Sul’s trendiest nightclubs, 00 (Av. Padre Leonal França 240, Gávea, tel. 21/2540-8041, www.00site.com.br [2], 8:30 a.m.–3:30 a.m. Thurs.–Sun., cover R$20–50), which is located inside Rio [3]’s planetarium. Star-gazing also occurs inside this sleek and chic hybrid bar/disco/restaurant with the likes Mick Jagger and Javier Bardem appearing among the usual bevy of wealthy young Zona Sulistas, models, and TV celebs. To keep clients on their well-pedicured toes, the tunes are extremely eclectic and vary from house to ’80s and ’90s memorabilia, with guest DJs taking charge of frequent festas.
