Housed in a stunning modernist steel and glass creation, designed by Affonso Eduardo Reidy and overlooking the Baía de Guanabara from Parque do Flamengo [1], the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM, Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Flamengo, tel. 21/2240-4944, www.mamrio.com.br [2], noon–6 p.m. Tues.–Fri., noon–7 p.m. Sat.–Sun., R$5) boasts one of Brazil [3]’s most interesting and important collections of 20th-century art.
A sampling of international artists commingles with key works by leading national figures such as Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Lasar Segal, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Cândido Portinari, Ivan Serpa, and Antônio Dias.
Aside from hosting some quality temporary exhibits, the Museu de Arte Moderna has a cinema that screens art films and a bright and attractive café with a great collection of international magazines.
