South Carolina [1] is an orchid-crazy state, with growers and connoisseurs sprinkled throughout. Perhaps the leading purveyor is Carter & Holmes Orchids (629 Mendenhall Rd., 803/276-0579, www.carterandholmes.com [2], Mon.–Sat. 9 a.m.–5 p.m.) a few miles south of Newberry [3], which began as a corsage dealer after World War II. Today you can tour their 18 greenhouses and admire their many orchids. And yes, they’ll ship directly to you.

If wine is more your thing, head about four miles outside of town just off Highway 34 and visit the Enoree River Vineyard (1650 Dusty Rd., 803/276-2855, www.enoreeriverwinery.com [4], Thurs.–Sat. 10 a.m.–6 p.m.) opened in 2006 by Richard and Laura LaBarre. You can tour the grounds, purchase gourmet goods and wine made from their home-grown muscadine grapes, and of course, sample the wares.
