Northwest of Camden [1] is the nearly century-old Springdale Race Course (200 Knights Hills Rd., 803/432-6513), which also hosts the town’s two biggest steeplechase events. At the entrance to the track you’ll find the National Steeplechase Museum (803/432-6513, www.nationalsteeplechasemuseum.org [2], Wed.–Sat. 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sept.–May, other times by appointment, free), containing a well-managed and exhaustive collection of vintage photos, artifacts, trophies, racing colors, and archival records detailing the rich history of steeplechase in America, with an obvious focus on South Carolina’s key role in that equestrian genre.
Get to Springdale Race Course by taking Highway 521 (Broad Street) north through Camden, and then turning left onto Knights Hill Road. The track is a little ways up on your right.
