The popular Immaculate Consumption (933 Main St., 803/799-9053, Mon.–Fri. 8 a.m.–7 p.m.) near the State House [1] isn’t a peaceful oasis, but more of a community gathering place. The bakery items should be tasted to be believed, and their lunch items are worth checking out for taste as well as for convenience. And in a town better known for sweet tea, the coffee selection is excellent. The only drawback is the short hours.
More like the classic college coffeehouse with long hours to match, Cool Beans Coffee (1217 College St., 803/779-4277, Mon.–Fri. 7 a.m.–midnight, Sat.–Sun. 9 a.m.–midnight) hosts an eclectic crowd, all chillin’ to indie tunes.
A favorite, if quirky, spot in the Vista is Nonnah’s (930 Gervais St., 803/779-9599, Mon.–Fri. 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–10 p.m., Sat. 6 p.m.–midnight), an eatery better known for its bar scene and for its great desserts.
Yes, there’s a Starbucks (747 Saluda Ave., 803/779-1082) downtown, in the heart of Five Points.
