Okay, it’s not that historic and not all that natural, but Harbour Town is still pretty cool. The dominant element is the squat, colorful Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum (149 Lighthouse Rd., 843/671-2810, www.harbourtownlighthouse.com [1], 10 a.m.–dusk), which has never really helped a ship navigate its way to the island.
The 90-foot structure was built in 1970 purely to give the tourists a little atmosphere, and that it does, as kids especially love climbing the stairs to the top (at $2 per person, that is) and looking out over the expanse of Hilton Head Island [2].
This being Hilton Head, of course, there’s a gift shop at the top, too.
The other attraction here is the boisterous café and shopping scene around the marina and the nearby park area. The public can access Sea Pines Plantation, which contains Harbour Town, but it’ll cost you a $5 “road use fee.”
It’s worth it especially if you also pay a visit to the Stoney-Baynard Ruins [3] and Sea Pines Forest Preserve [4] Sea Pines attractions.
