Teetering halfway up Flatts Hill, Twins Variety (5 Middle Rd., tel. 441/292-4583, 6 a.m.–midnight daily) would be easy to miss were it not for all the truck drivers, cabbies, and neighborhood residents angling for a parking spot outside. Named for owners, twins Peter and Paul Adderley, the pocket-sized convenience store is perfect for picking up a daily newspaper, cream bun, cat food, or any assortment of other basic necessities.
Long checkout lines during weekends and evenings are the only downside of Shelly Bay MarketPlace (110 North Shore Rd., tel. 441/293-0966, 8 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 1–5 p.m. Sun.), a superstore with everything you could want for food or drink, as well as toys, kitchen supplies, beachware like towels and coolers, party balloons, and many other products.
Tony’s Fine Foods (202 North Shore Rd., at the Coney Island junction, tel. 441/293-3354, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Sun.) is where Bermudians make a lunchtime stop for their chorizo-on-a-bun (a grilled Portuguese sausage delicacy). The recently renovated grocery also stocks fresh fruit, vegetables, cool drinks, and basic foodstuffs and toiletries.
