The story of the island’s now-defunct railroad of the 1930s and 1940s is told at the Bermuda Railway Museum (37 North Shore Rd., tel. 441/293-1774, fax 441/293-4753, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri. weather permitting, admission free), where memorabilia from the train, dubbed “Old Rattle and Shake,” is exhibited. Listen to an audio history of the Railway amid the quaint clutter of model trains, authentic old signs, rails, and spikes, as well as books, maps, prints, and other Railway-related items.
The tiny building itself is historic; now situated along the Shelly Bay stretch of the walking trail, it was once the “Aquarium” Railway Station. Bermuda cedar and china antiques and collectibles are also for sale. Proprietor Rosa Hollis (tel. 441/337-9297, rosa [at] northrock [dot] bm) lives across the street; call her to arrange a tour, or to open the museum if it happens to be closed during quieter months.
