Amphibious athletes take to the waters of Harrington Sound [1] for the marathon Round-the-Sound Swim, held in mid-October. The charity event, organized by the Bermuda Open Water Swimming Association (Patty Hill 441/238-0652, or Brian Frick at 441/535-2080), is competitive, with staggered starts beginning at 10 a.m. for five distance categories, from 0.8K to 10K. The joint finish is at the private Palmetto Bay Beach on Harrington Sound Road.
The Round-the-Sound Swim awards trophies for speed, position, and money raised from pledges, but visitors to the island can participate by simply paying the entry fee. Kayaks, paramedics, and police keep participants safe.
