Cut through this dramatically named access route to get from Middle Road to the South Shore. At the foot of the steep hill, near a landmark rubber tree outside Warwick Post Office, a memorial commemorates the island’s slaves.
Formerly the site of a local slave market, the corner today is the staging area for a grassroots market organized by the Bermuda Small Business Association (tel. 441/292-5570, contact Roxanne Christopher, rvchristopher [at] gov [dot] bm). The market is held April–December 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily and brings scores of vendors selling homemade jams, shoes, retail clothing, plants, vegetables, fresh fish, and baked goods. There’s even a play area for kids inside a large tent, where they can test their skills at various computer-game stations.
To reach the beaches, continue over Khyber Pass, bordered by soaring limestone quarries used for past building works. Spice Hill Road, on the other side, winds down to South Shore Road.
