Meander by scooter or foot along the quaint harborside edging Pomander Road, a one-way, largely residential lane that slips off the bustle of The Lane into yesteryear. Ducks paddle past the mangroves and moored pleasure boats, wooden dinghies sit on the shoreline, and grassy nooks invite roadside picnics.
Despite its tranquility, there are a few enterprises along the loop back to Harbour Road. Aberfeldy Nurseries (3 Pomander Rd., at the junction with The Lane, tel. 441/236-2927), one of the oldest and largest plant retailers, is a good place to look at hundreds of the island’s endemic and ornamental garden plants.
Further west along the lane are two guesthouses, Little Pomander and Erith, which have waterfront properties. And the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (tel. 441/236-2250, www.rhadc.bm [1]) can be found at the western end of the lane, home to hundreds of motorboats and fine yachts, which have docking rights and moorings.
Hugged by the serpentine Harbour Road, Red Hole is the name for the sheltered bay here, home to a working boatyard and a tiny beach, where dinghies used to ferry boat-owners to their yachts are pulled up on the sand at low tide.
