Empire Grocery (12 North Shore Rd., tel. 441/292-0277 or 441/295-2625, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Fri. and Sat.) has been part of the North Shore community since 1927 when the DeSilva family first opened its doors. Relatives still run the friendly, efficient convenience store, packed with “as much as we can fit,” says an employee. That includes liquor, beer, grocery products, and deli meats.
Howard’s Mini Mart (99 Middle Rd., tel. 441/236-7037, fax 441/236-7000, 6 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Sat. summer, 6 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat. winter, 6 a.m.–1 p.m. Sun. year-round) is a family-owned roadside grocery offering all the basics, including some straight-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables.
Lindo’s Market (4 Watlington Rd. East, tel. 441/236-5623, www.lindos.bm [1], 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon., Tues., and Thurs., 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Wed., Fri., and Sat.) is the only major supermarket in Devonshire [2], and one of the island’s biggest and best stocked. Now owned by the Italian Bermudian Zanol family, the modern floor space includes a harvest of organic foods and Bermuda-grown produce, cheeses from around the world, a carefully stocked wine section, magazines and children’s books, and an outstanding fish and meat department boasting fresh-caught Bermuda wahoo and tuna, traditional Bermuda codfish cakes, and a wide selection of imported fish and meat.
