With no central community or village, Devonshire [1] is not a shopper’s paradise. One quirky exception is The Barn (53 Devon Spring Rd., tel. 441/236-3155, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Thurs. and Sat.), a bargain-hunter’s treasure trove, spilling over with secondhand toys, collectibles, and an impressive stock of books, from vintage and just-released fiction to kids’ mystery series from the 1970s and 1980s.
Items often cost just a quarter or two, and nothing is more than a few dollars. The nonprofit facility raises funds for several island charities. Opposite The Barn stands Bermuda’s other hospital, the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, a psychiatric treatment facility.
