Anyone can play at the government-owned William Joell Tennis Stadium (2 Marsh Folly Rd., at Cedar Ave., tel. 441/292-0105, fax 441/292-4802, 8 a.m.β10 p.m. Mon.βFri., 8 a.m.β5 p.m. Sat. and Sun., $8 an hour). The popular facility, named for the Bermudian recognized for knocking down racial barriers in the sport, has eight courts (three clay, five hard courts), three of which are lit for night play, for an additional $8 fee.
Traditional tennis attire is required, and advance bookings are recommended. Peak times are after 5 p.m. and on Saturday mornings. Tennis pro Eugene Woods gives lessons (adult $75 an hour, or $250 for five; juniors $45). The shop sells cold drinks and tennis balls and also rents rackets ($5).
