Cinemas

Hamilton [1] has two cinemas, both of which show major box-office releases and the occasional Oscar-nominated indie. Twice-nightly showings, plus weekend matinees, keep movies around for a week or two. Occasionally, films will then move east or west to the island’s other two cinemas. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online through www.boxoffice.bm [2] or www.bdatix.bm [3].

The Speciality Cinema and Grill (12 Church St., tel. 441/292-2135, www.littletheatre.bm [4], 7 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Fri., 9 a.m.–11 p.m. Sat. and Sun.) resulted when The Little Theatre was bought and renovated by new owners in late 2008. The Specialty Cinema is now accessible from Church Street, near the Queen Street junction, and moviegoers buy their tickets and popcorn from the café and deli at the entrance. You can even sit down for a cold drink or hot meal (roast beef, grilled chicken, fish sandwiches) before the show.

The Liberty Theatre (49 Union Square, Victoria St., tel. 441/291-2035, www.libertyneptune.com [5]) is a larger venue with a regular-sized screen, though its technology still lags behind the average North American multiplex. After a good run at The Liberty, films usually head west to a second run at the sister cinema The Neptune, at Dockyard [6].
