Homosexuality is not widely accepted in the Virgin Islands [1], and many islanders are extremely homophobic. But where gay Virgin Islanders face an uphill battle for acceptance, gay and lesbian travelers are tolerated. For the warmest welcome and greatest freedom, gay and lesbian travelers should first consider St. Croix, which has several openly gay-friendly hotels and nightspots.
Virgin Islanders everywhere will turn a blind eye to your sexuality as long as you let them, so it is best to avoid open demonstrations of affection and obvious indications of your sexuality. Don’t ask, don’t tell is the unspoken and unwritten social contract for gays and lesbians in the islands.
